I was talking with some of the other members of my Pigeon flock, and according to them I have a good idea on what to do with the popular CTF series. I'm assuming that Trip's league worked well, seeing how there were alot of participants and banter over the results, so I thought about taking it one step further. First off, there would be alot of work involved in this, and I'm sure that if it was ever completed, the other servers would copy it, but hopefully we can get enough support for it early on, thus increasing the size of our server.
In a nutshell I'm proposing that each "town" on Graal has it's own CTF team and stadium. Each team will have a "manager", "a coach", and maybe an entire roster of about 10 people altogether. The teams will be all local guild tags, and with these tags the team-members could access a clubhouse, locker room, and a practice area in their home stadium (much like the Pizza Team). Each stadium will support a different CTF arena, and on "non-gamedays", the rooms will be open up to the public. I believe that the founding teams should make their own CTF arenas, they don't necissarily need to be existing gametypes, thus supporting a "home-field advantage". All stadiums however are required to be fair, and this fairness will be judged by an unbiased entity like Nighty or something. Also, all stadiums must support an audience section so people can come and watch the matchups. About the existing gametypes, I believe that a central CTF complex should be built that allows GCs to host the old favorites, with the ability for players to host their own PUBLIC games. Along with the public and GC hostable CTFs for tickets, a hall of fame of players should be made, a lobby, and possibly some fictional "trophy" on display that the professional teams will be playing for. Those that win the championship can put the trophy in their stadium until the next championship game, and have their name "etched" in it for prosterity.
Alright, that's what needs to be built, so let me explain how I think the games between the pros should work. I think that there should be a season of about 3 months, maybe matchups every Sunday. The matchups will be refereed by Game Coordinators or possibly GPs that aren't in the respective teams. All of the teams will be playing each other in a series of away and home games, with a playoff system of the top four teams arising in the end. Also, instead of having a game that is all about points scored, I think that the games should be all TIME based. For instance, instead of first to 10 goals, it would be who could score the most in 60 minutes, with a half time in between. The coaches should be able to stand in a box in each part of the field, allowing them to yell at their players and give pointers. Also, I think that the coaches should be able to have three alotted 2-minute timeouts per half, allowing them to regroup and think strategy. Halftime will consist of a 10 minute break which will allow people to go to the restroom, discuss strategy etc.
I think that once the "season" starts, the players on the teams are stuck on the rosters they sign up for unless the managers of the respective teams come together and request for trades. The trade would be mediated by a GP or GC. Once playoffs being, the rosters are locked, and no trades can take place. The manager will also be responsible for drafting players during the off season, releasing players for conduct reasons, and being an ambassador for the team, etc. Suggestions for team-names so far are, The Lands End Laggers (team I would be on), The Babord Bombers, the Destiny Destroyers, the Nimda Cappers, the Snow Town Icers, etc etc (these can easily be changed by the respective founding teams).
Obviously alot of work would be involved with this, and seeing how quests are at a standstill, the players love CTF, and the passion of the GC LATs, I think this would be a great use of our time. If we were to create this and spread the news about it to players on other servers, we might be able to have something bigger than the Monthly GCS championship on this server. The task of recruiting enough players, making CTF public, creating the stadiums, drafting a final set of rules, picking manager and teams, and sending up a schedule would be difficult... but in the end I think it would be a very rewarding experience on Classic.
